SSB/Frequency Adjustment on a 2001D

Preamble:

My 2001D has suffered from two annoying problems. First of all the SSB
was "off" making it nearly impossible to tune SSB signals and get them
"right". I have found instructions on how to correct this problem and I
even obtained a copy of the service manual. This allowed me to fix the
SSB over a range of frequencies. That is I could set the SSB to work
correctly at 10 MHz but it would be off at 2.5 MHz. Even the service
manual didn't help here. This also affected the SYNC adjustment so that
the SYNC change from upper to lower would not occur at 0.0 over the
entire range of frequencies. I suspected this was because the frequency
range was out of adjustment but I could find no simple adjustment for
this in the Sony Service Manual.

After screwing around one day I found an almost perfect adjustment
procedure which does not require a great deal of special equipment.

Disclaimer:

Requirements:

Phillips screw driver
External Power supply
External antenna
Tweaker and/or small screw driver.
Digital Volt meter (optional)
Strong (local) AM (midwave) station
Strong SW station, the higher the frequency the better.

Tips

1.  Read the instructions first.

2.  Mark the position of all the pots (CT601 is difficult tho!) so you
    can put things back the way they were.

3.  Don't fiddle with any other pots, capacitors or inductors. I did
    this and I payed for it. I fiddled with about 5 other "pots" and
    spent hours trying to get my radio to work right again! Adjustment
    of other pots requires the use of a high frequency meter and ideally
    an oscilloscope. I have neither.

4.  Follow my instructions step by step. I had my radio apart about 30
    times yesterday. These are good instructions.

5.  More than likely your radio is aligned pretty well, so you shouldn't
    have to worry about other adjustments.

6.  None of these pots needs to be turned allot to get a noticeable
    affect. So, if you start turning a pot and nothing seems to be
    happening STOP, you probably have the wrong pot.

7.  Unless you are very lucky or careful you will lose all your
    memorized frequencies. You may want to write them down first.

Disassembly:

1.  Place the radio face down on a soft surface so it won't be
    scratched. If you don't have anything suitable use a newspaper.

2.  Remove the main batteries and the seven screws holding the back on
    the radio. You must leave the computer batteries (2 AAs) in the
    radio. Note that the shorter screw goes in the battery compartment.

3.  Remove the back of the radio. There are no wires to worry about.

4.  Facing you there are two circuit boards and the speaker. Place the
    radio such that the top of the radio is facing you and the smaller
    circuit board is on your left.

5.  There are three screws holding the larger circuit board. Remove the
    two outside screws and use them to hold the small circuit board on
    the left in place. The remaining screw in the larger circuit board
    is in the middle and is very long. Remove this also.

6.  Carefully pry the main board away from the radio. It is held in
    place by a few plastic tabs. Pry them open to move the main board.
    There are a number of wires and two ribbon cables leading to the key
    pad. Be careful not to pull them out. You will need all of the wires
    attached to the main board. You need to gain access to a number of
    adjustment capacitors and pots on the other side of the main board.

    Note: When you reassemble the radio you will have to line up the RF
    gain control, the Volume control and the tone switch.

7.  Place the radio on its top so that you can simultaneously work the
    controls and tweak the pots.

8.  Connect the external power supply and external antenna. You are now
    ready to perform the adjustments.
 

Adjustments:

There are three main adjustments

    - SSB
    - Frequency
    - SYNC

They should be performed in order.
 

SSB Adjustment

1.  This adjustment will set up your SSB. It should be done on a local
    AM signal. It is important to use a lower frequency signal. Do not
    use a SW signal. This adjustment is from the Sony Service Manual.

2.  On the volume control side of the main board, closer to the bottom
    of the radio (near the top as you look at it with the top of the
    radio at the bottom), there is a rectangular metal box. This is the
    SYNC unit. Toward the center of the board near this box a blue pot,
    VT1. You adjust this pot to give a voltage at a test point.

    In the metal box there is a small hole to give access to CT601. This
    variable capacitor is used to adjust the SSB.

    Toward the outside of the board near the metal box another blue pot,
    VT2, it is for adjusting the SYNC in the last section.

3.  If you don't have a voltage meter skip to step 6.

4.  On the printed circuit side of the main board opposite the sync unit
    there is a metallic covering. Near the volume control side, about 1/2
    an inch in there is a row of solder points that "appear" to be
    connected to an IC chip. The first of these is the test point. Near
    the bottom of the board (your top) there is a large patch of solder.
    This is a ground point.

5.  Adjust VT1 to obtain a voltage of 1.5 VDC at the test point.

6.  Tune the radio to a MW, AM station. I used CBC 1010 here in Calgary.
    I would suggest using talk radio as it seems to be easier to tune
    SSB using voices than music. It is important to use a lower
    frequency station. DO NOT use a SW station. Set the radio to either
    USB or LSB.

7.  Adjust CT601 inside the sync unit until the radio is clear and
    intelligible. Switch between USB and LSB while making this
    adjustment so you get the SSB adjusted as best as possible. This
    adjustment is pretty finicky. You do not have to move the capacitor
    adjustment very much to get a big affect. On my radio the adjustment
    is nearly perfect so that the USB and LSB sound just like the radio
    on NARROW.

    If you don't have a screw driver to get at CT601 you may
    alternatively adjust the VT1 pot (this is not the Sony recommended
    procedure). The tolerance on the voltage at the test point is
    1.3-1.6 volts.
 

Frequency Adjustment (Not in the Service Manual)

1.  You must perform the SSB adjustment on a MW, lower frequency station
    first. The instructions to do this are above.

2.  Toward the power supply side of the main board there is a RED pot,
    CT4 (?) (can't see its name) which is beside a tallish flat metal
    covered component. This looks like an adjustment to a crystal. DO
    NOT ADJUST THE POTS IN THE METALLIC ENCLOSURES.

3.  Tune a higher frequency shortwave station that has a  frequency you can
    trust. I used WWV at 15 MHz. Place the radio in either USB or LSB.

4.  Adjust the RED pot until you can hear clearly. DO NOT ADJUST CT601
    or VT1, instead adjust the pot near the crystal. You may want to try
    switching between USB and LSB.

NOTE:  The Service manual adjustment calls for CT4 to be adjusted so
       that the base of Q13 has a frequency of 100 MHz +/- 30 Hz. If you
       don't have a frequency meter, or it is not that accurate my
       procedure may be better as it aligns the frequency over the SW
       band and keeps it in adjustment with the SSB.

SYNC Adjustment (From the Sony Service manual)

1.  First perform the SSB and Frequency adjustments above.

2.  Tune to a strong signal. Place the radio in NARROW and SYNC

3.  Adjust the blue SYNC pot, VT2 (near the outside of the main board on
    the volume control side) until the SYNC indicator just switches from
    LOWER to UPPER. Try this on several stations over a wide range of
    frequencies. My experience was that after performing the SSB and
    Frequency adjustments the SYNC adjustment was trivial.
 

Other things to check

Since you have the radio dissembles you may want to check a few
things...

1.  The whip antenna connects the the 2001 via tension loaded piece of
    metal. You should check that this "wire" still has tension in it.
    This is on the back of the radio.

2.  The batteries also make connection via a spring loaded wire. Check
    these also.

3.  Check and perhaps resolder the points where these spring connections
    make contact with the radio.

4.  Retention the power battery spring. This is a major source of your
    radio "resetting" itself.

5.  A good time to perform all those other mods, install the KIWA
    filters (highly recommended) check Q303, etc.
 

Reassembly

Simply reverse the procedure used in disassembly. Pay close attention to
getting the volume, RF GAIN and tone controls aligned with the main
board.

Remember that the board has a long screw in the middle and the back has
a short screw in the battery compartment.
